1. Pronunciation of the unstressed ending -eo

The unstressed ending -eo produces a sound that can oscillate, depending on the case, between [ɔw] ~ [ju] ~ [ew]. For consistency we retain it, as many authors do, for words that originally had it and still form their plural in -ei. From angeo [ˈaŋdʒɔw] “angel” one will have angei [ˈaŋdʒej], from umeo [ˈymˑju] “humid” and “humble” one will have umei [ˈymˑej] ~ [ˈymˑi], etc.

2. Cluster [nj] in urban Genoese

The cluster [nj] at the beginning of a word and between vowels is often realized in urban Genoese and related varieties as [ɲ] (the “gn” sound). Thus we have the pronunciation [ˈɲaːtri] for niatri (“gnatri”), [iɲeˈsjuŋ] for inieçion (“igneçion”), [ˈaɲˑa] for ania (“agna”), etc. Note that masculine singulars ending in -nio [-ɲˑu] regularly form their plural in -nni [-nˑi]: testimònio [testiˈmɔɲˑu] > testimònni [testiˈmɔnˑi], capitanio [kapiˈtaɲˑu] > capitanni [kapiˈtanˑi], etc.
