In Genoese, many lemmas displaying the prefix in- result from the dissimilation of an earlier geminate consonant: thus inlustrâ < illustrem, inmenso < immensus, inludde < illudere, etc. Other terms instead preserve the Latin prefix directly, as in inscrive < inscribere. A different case is that of words such as imagine < imaginem, which never had either the prefix in- or a geminate consonant: in such cases, the spelling in- is neither etymologically nor phonetically justified. Forms such as inmagine, inmaginâ and inmaginaçion, occasionally found in modern usage, are therefore to be regarded as Italian-influenced hypercorrections and should be avoided in favor of imagine, imaginâ, imaginaçion, etc.
